International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists – November 2, 2025
A Call for Justice and Accountability
There is no word, only silence—
The silence of truth denied.
Truth has no master.
And yet, it is hunted.
Every year, across the globe, journalists, media workers, local fixers, and freelance reporters are harassed, attacked, imprisoned (or even killed) for daring to reveal the truth. Their stories are silenced before reaching the public, their legacies buried beneath impunity.
This is not just a violation of human rights. It is a breach of international law, a threat to democracy, and a stain on collective conscience.
As of 2025, the situation remains dire. Despite calls for justice, over 85% of crimes against journalists still go unpunished, according to global watchdogs like CPJ and RSF. The killers walk free. The silence deepens.
Why November 2 Matters
Established by the United Nations in 2013, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalistshonors those who have lost their lives while defending the public’s right to know. The date commemorates the brutal killing of French journalists Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, murdered in Mali on this day in 2013.
But this day is more than remembrance. It is a rallying cry. A moment to demand justice, accountability, and protection for those who speak truth to power.
Hotspots in 2025 with Countries Still Facing Crisis
Despite progress in some regions, the following countries continue to rank among the most dangerous places for journalists:
- Mexico: A deadly nexus of organized crime and political corruption still fuels rampant violence, with journalists frequently targeted.
- Sudan and Gaza: In escalating conflict zones, journalists are facing indiscriminate violence, with several killed just this year during clashes.
- India: Rising intolerance and polarization have led to increasing attacks on reporters, particularly those investigating state-level abuses or corporate interests.
- Afghanistan: Post-Taliban control remains hostile to press freedom; many journalists operate in exile or underground.
- Russia: State repression has intensified since the war in Ukraine, with critical media silenced, exiled, or detained.
- Iran: Crackdowns on dissenting voices, particularly women journalists and human rights reporters, persist despite international condemnation.
Solutions for a Safer Future
1. Enforce Legal Protections: Governments must pass and implement journalist-specific protection laws… and ensure crimes are investigated and prosecuted swiftly.
2. Strengthen Global Monitoring: International bodies should support independent investigations and establish real-time alert systems to respond to threats.
3. Elevate Diplomacy and Sanctions: Apply targeted sanctions against individuals or regimes complicit in attacks on media freedom.
4. Invest in Journalist Safety: Provide resources for digital and physical safety training, emergency relocation programs, and mental health support.
5. Amplify Voices: Media organizations, educators, and citizens must work together to promote media literacy and public support for press freedom.
Remember. Resist. Respond.

May their light cut through the darkness.
May truth rise. Resilient and unyielding.
May justice no longer wait.

Dear MichaelSo many suffer in their body, heart and mind… others from jealousy or evil from others. .. others again from lack of food, clean water, work… education… the list is long. Let us try to make the world better around us… little steps for us, but giant steps for humanity.Thank you for your encouragement!
Working as a journalist is very difficult. Apart from the verbal attacks that are accepted on a daily basis, there are still attacks and killings that exist in specific conflict zones. Journalism, especially in these areas, tends to be a dangerous extreme sport. But these journalists, in order to endanger their own lives, thirsted for the truth and defended it by every means. Congratulations on reminding you and honoring the names of the murdered journalists on your page.
Yes… they must be honoured indeed. So many jobs are risky, exposing to unforeseen dangers. And journalism is one of them. Thank you.
The topic you have chosen to discuss is one that I think needs utmost attention. The way you have presented it yourself is really awesome and I must say it is really interesting to read this post. I agree that the aggression against journalists should be stopped because a friend of mine decided not to do anything in journalism because of the obvious reasons you have stated here. Nice one!
Welcome. Journalism is a hard job, just like many others. It often exposes them to unforeseen events, with deadly lashes. Journalism has many niches like sport, or beauty. And some niches are more dangerous than others indeed. Perhaps your friend must consider a niche with less risks. Especially if he is a good writer… A good article is a joy for all. Our world needs good story tellers as well!Good day!
Thank you for bringing attention to this very important subject. I am always saddened when I hear stories of journalists who are harmed or even worse killed doing their jobs. I wish there were a way to protect them but unfortunately as we well know, there are people that do not want their secrets to be reported. Hopefully things like this can bring awareness to the cause and help journalists do their job safely.
Yes Travis, every aggression is one too much indeed and saddens us all. We need to reflect on that and make sure impunity ends. So many jobs are risky. Fireman, police officer, journalism,… the list is long. But journalism is indeed of a particular kind.Let us remember and honor those who defend truth .
This is an issue that should be taken serious by everyone in authority to protect these journalist from those who persecute them for doing their expected job. Such matters of importance should not be left unattended. Government and those who may be privileged to witness any act of cruelty to these journalist should do all within their power to protect them and laws should be made to see to these issues. Should such cruel act continue, then there wouldn’t be much value for the truth .
Yes, it is a very serious issue… and one wonders if some times silence does not impose to prevent worse and not expose others… And those who expose the truth indeed are the new martyrs…
