March 3 – World Wildlife Day
March 3 marks World Wildlife Day, a significant date set aside to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. Established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2013, it coincides with the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973, an international agreement between governments aimed at ensuring that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival.
World Wildlife Day serves multiple purposes. It aims to highlight the critical issues facing wildlife, including habitat destruction, illegal trafficking, and climate change. It also celebrates the beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and raises awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people. At the same time, it reminds us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime and human-induced reduction of species, which have wide-ranging economic, environmental, and social impacts.
Ways to Celebrate World Wildlife Day
- Educate Yourself and Others: Use this day to learn more about wildlife conservation issues and share your knowledge with friends and family.
- Support Wildlife Conservation Efforts: Whether it’s through donations or volunteering, supporting organizations dedicated to wildlife conservation can make a big difference.
- Visit Zoos, Aquariums, and National Parks: These places are not only educational but also support conservation through breeding programs and by raising awareness.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Simple actions at home can have a positive impact on wildlife by reducing waste and pollution.
- Advocate for Policies: Support policies and legislation that protect wildlife and their habitats.
A Poem for World Wildlife Day
In the wild, where the untamed roam free,
Lies a world of wonder for you and me.
From towering trees to the deep blue sea,
Life thrives in every nook, as far as we can see.
March third, a day to reflect and unite,
For the creatures of day, and those of the night.
Let’s pledge to protect, to conserve their plight,
For in their survival, our world shines bright.
So on World Wildlife Day, let’s all stand together,
To safeguard our planet, now and forever.
For every beast, bird, and bee,
In their freedom, our spirits soar free.
