The Unbroken Circle
The unbroken circle is a simple image of people holding hands and staying connected. There is no first person and no last person. Everyone helps hold the circle together. It reminds us that family, friendship and community are not only about being close to each other. They are about continuing to care for each other when life changes.
An unbroken circle does not mean that nothing bad happens. People leave, families change, friends move away, children grow up and people die. The circle can be stretched without being broken. What matters is that separation does not become abandonment. Even when people are far apart, there can still be a feeling that says: you still belong here.
Belonging is not only something we feel. It is something we do. We call, we listen, we remember, we visit, we help and we notice when someone is missing. A family or community stays strong because people keep choosing the relationship. The circle survives through small acts of care repeated over time.
A circle also has no front and no back. Everyone has a place. This is different from seeing life as a ladder where everyone tries to climb above someone else. The circle asks a different question. Not: how far did you get? But: who are you still connected to? People can be different and still belong together. Unity does not mean that everyone has to be the same.
The circle is also about what we pass from one generation to the next. We inherit stories, songs, habits, values, memories, traditions and sometimes pain. Some things should be protected and passed on. Other things should stop with us. Keeping the circle unbroken does not mean repeating every old pattern. We can stay connected while changing what needs to change. Prejudice, cruelty, silence and resentment do not have to be inherited forever.
We often understand the meaning of the circle most clearly when someone is struggling. It is easy to stand together when everything is going well. The real test comes when someone fails, loses something, becomes lonely or disappears from the group. Do we notice? Do we judge them from far away, or do we try to understand and help? Keeping the circle does not mean accepting everything. Healthy boundaries can still exist. Connection and care do not require us to ignore harm.
The circle also reminds us that none of us will be here forever. The people we love today will one day live mainly in our memories and stories. That is why it matters to pass things on while we can. Tell the story. Teach the song. Share the recipe. Make the phone call. Repair what can still be repaired. Say what needs to be said while the people we love are still here to hear it.
Maybe the unbroken circle is not really about avoiding loss. Loss is part of life. The deeper idea is that love, memory and belonging can continue even after change and separation. The circle stays alive whenever we continue reaching for one another.
Will the circle be unbroken?
The answer depends on what we choose to do for each other.
In memory of my sweet mother…
