Father of the people,
Loved and mourned by many…
A voice among the voiceless,
Pope Francis,
Servant and flame.
Defender of peace,
He walked among thorns
with the gentleness of doves,
Carried no sword…
only an olive branch
and a heart wide as the sky.
Defender of the poor,
He stooped where the world looked away,
saw Christ in every wrinkle,
heard hope in broken bread.
Defender of nature,
He blessed the wind,
called rivers kin,
and taught the soil to speak again.
“Laudato Si,” he whispered..
and the trees remembered their names.
Advocate of mercy,
Of fraternity and hope,
He stood -against the current-
and let love be his anchor.
And we reflect:
What is strength,
if not kindness?
What is holiness,
if not the courage
to kneel?
He asked us to pray for him.
Now we, the many,
ask him:
Intercede, holy shepherd,
from the fields beyond the veil…
Pray for us
in morning light,
and when the stars fall silent.
