The Tree Blind Men and the deaf
The three blind men and the deaf. Two poems drawing on the classic tale to reflect on human perception and understanding.
The Three Blind Men
Three blind men, adrift in a forest vast,
Encounter an elephant on their path at last.
One feels the feet, declaring them as stems,
Another, the skin, a tapestry of textured hems.
The third grasps the tail, deeming it thin and coarse,
Each confined to shadows of the whole, by force.
Blinded, not by darkness, but by their narrow scope,
Their interpretations, a dance of hope and trope.
A fragment of truth, each passionately defends,
Yet the elephant’s essence, it transcendently transcends.
A trumpet’s blast, a call to awaken and revise,
Forces them to question their previous surmise.
“What is this marvel?” in unison, they inquire,
A moment of unity, igniting curiosity’s fire.
Thus are we, ensnared in shadows and beliefs,
Until life’s trumpet dispels our griefs.
May we listen for the call, ever profound,
To see beyond our views, where true understanding is found.
A companion piece for three deaf individuals
Let’s craft a companion piece that mirrors the profundity of the first, exploring perception from the perspective of three deaf individuals encountering the same elephant. This poem will aim to evoke a similar reflection on understanding and communication, emphasizing the richness of non-verbal experience and the diverse ways in which we interpret our world.
The Three Deaf Seekers
In a realm where silence blankets every tree,
Three deaf seekers wander, spirits free.
Their path crosses with a gentle giant, grand,
An elephant, a marvel, in the land.
One feels the breath, a rhythm, steady and strong,
Another, the heartbeat, a silent, vibrant song.
The third meets the gaze, eyes wise and deep,
Communicating more than words could ever leap.
Speechless, not for lack of words, but for awe,
Their understanding, a tapestry without flaw.
Each perception, a piece of a greater tale,
Revealing truths where spoken words might fail.
A gentle nudge, a gesture of mutual respect,
Invites them to see, to connect, to reflect.
“What wonders,” they ponder, “do we share?”
In silence, finding a language beyond compare.
Thus are we, navigating life’s silent streams,
Our experiences more than they might seem.
May we cherish each touch, each sight, each sign,
In the silent moments, where understanding can shine.
This piece aims to celebrate the richness of non-verbal communication and the deep connections that can be formed beyond the spoken word, inviting readers to consider the vastness of perception and the beauty of diversity in experience.
An image illustrating the encounter between the three blind men and the elephant, stirred by the elephant’s trumpet. It captures the moment of wonder, discovery, and the enchanting atmosphere of the forest. May this scene inspire further tales and reflections on perception and understanding.
Happy perception and understanding!
